My students love creating their own rhythms. In the exercise, they put 4 "beat seats" down on the carpet and had to compose a 4 beat phrase, using quarters, eighth notes, or rest. I normally would have had them use a pipe cleaner to notate the rest, but they did just fine leaving that "beat seat" blank. Then students took turn playing someone else's rhythmic phrase. Fun!
